Golf Tees(Staff & Golfers)

One of the manufacturers helped me come up with the criteria we used, and, by in large, it fit the way I pick a tee. Here is what we used to judge the tees:

• Teeing it up - easy, hard, find the right height, have shaky hands
• Carrying it in your pocket - fits okay in your pocket, easy to get out, will it fit in standard tee holders
• Wear - how long it lasts
• Consistent height - are you able to easily place the tee at the height you prefer
• Performance - distance gained, if any
• Looks - same as clubs, just have to like the looks of it
• Club groove cleaning - many of you probably never think of this one, but I always forget to clean my groves and find myself doing it on the way to the tee box

We found tees could not be rated, the tee you use really depends on what you are looking for from a tee - distance, consistence height, wear or just saving the planet. Have I changed my tee due to this test, yes, I have.

Additional tees will be added occasionally.

Green Tee July 2012 - Website

The Green Tee is a decent, biodegradable tee. The color makes it easy to find after hitting the ball. Marks on the tee, although small, make it relatively easy to set the tee to the depth you like. It is durable, we only broke two tees while testing.

Teeing it up - very good
Carrying it in your pocket - good
Wear - broke a couple
Performance - no extra distance noted
Looks - nice
Club groove cleaning - okay
Biodegradable - yes

TefTee May 2012 - Website

The TefTee, was reported by our testers, lived up to its claims; most found it to be 5 to 8 yards longer. And interesting tee in that is is coated with Teflon, the tee has a unique look with the black head. One of the areas that stood out was the ease of placing the ball, especially considering it is a high performance tee. The tee was a little fragile, I broke one during an eighteen hole round and a few other testers reported breaking a tee. But overall, the tee was well liked.

Teeing it up - very good
Carrying it in your pocket - average
Wear - broke a couple
Performance - 5 + yards
Looks - nice
Club groove cleaning - not so much
Biodegradable - no

Mirror Tee April 2011 - Website

This was one of the more intriguing tees we tested; some serious engineering went into this tee which I won't go into here, but you can check out their website for all the details. It's 3.25 inches tall and claims to dramatically reduce the spin rate of your golf ball. The tee is designed to go into the ground at 17.5 degrees (leaning forward) or just until the ball wants to fall off the tee. Testing proved their claims - golfers saw a definite increase in distance, some as much as 20 yards.

Teeing it up - time consuming to set it properly, gets easier with time
Carrying it in your pocket - not a problem
Wear - would be very tough to break (we never did)
Consistent height - no indicator
Performance - more distance, the biggest plus with this tee
Looks - middle of the road, a little fat but not really a problem
Club groove cleaning - pretty good
Biodegradable - not stated

Evolve Epoch & S3 April 2011 - Website

More distance claimed which we found to be true. Easy to tee up even though it was a performance tee. The points at which the tee touches the ball are minimized to reduce friction. Their website is the first I have found with an online program for finding the proper height. Tee comes in varying heights from 1.5 to 3.25 inches. S3 tees have height bands, though our samples were brown and hard to see. Get the white ones.

Teeing it up - not a problem
Carrying it in your pocket - not a problem
Wear - you might need a few for an eighteen-hole round
Consistent height - Epoch no, sweet spot yes but don't get the brown tees
Performance - unofficially many said it resulted in more distance
Looks - good looking tee,
Club groove cleaning - pretty good
Biodegradable - yes

Champ Fly Tee April 2011 - Website

Like most of these tees, additional distance was claimed; and testers say, yes, it looked like they were longer. Fairly high rating for this. These tees come in various colors and heights, up to 3.75 for those looking for taller tees. Good solid tee.

Club groove cleaning - okay but not great
Biodegradable - claimed to be eco friendly

Excel Golf Zero Friction April 2011 - Website

Wide range of materials, designs, colors, heights, styles, etc. Website focuses on the gain in distance due to the three pronged head. Nice looking tee though testers sometimes had difficulties in teeing up their ball. Found that prongs might bend but the tee never broke.

Carrying it in your pocket - not a problem
Wear - great, prongs will bend before the tee will break
Consistent height - nothing to show same height

Looks - nice look with additional colors available
Club groove cleaning - very good using the prongs
Biodegradable - not stated

Excel Zero Friction Lock N Drive April 2011 - Website

Two tee lengths with adjustable stopper that further adjusts the ball height. The tees have all the benefits and downsides of the Zero Friction tee, with the additional benefit of setting a fixed height. They say that the flat ring works as a ball marker but then you have to reset the height. Occasionally a little hard to place depending on ground density. The Lock N Drive did break and the tee bent on occasion.

Teeing it up - little harder than the standard Zero Friction
Carrying it in your pocket - a little bulky
Wear - great, prongs will bend before the tee will break
Consistent height - height adjustable with a lockable ring
Performance - unofficially many said it resulted in more distance
Looks - little odd with the height ring
Club groove cleaning - very good using the prongs
Biodegradable - not stated

BioTEE April 2011 - Website

The big selling point with this tee is that it is totally biodegradable, other than that nothing really stands out. Ball is easy to place but tee breaks often. If you care about the environment (a good thing), this is your tee.

This tee is great for people that don't want to think about setting their tee. This tee is simple to set every time and very easy to place the ball. Flex Head Tee April 2011 - Website

Now here is an interesting tee, it's guaranteed to be unbreakable, for life. The tee is a fixed height tee that bends when struck. Sometimes a little hard to place in the ground and occasionally you have to bend it straight again, just don't lose it, it's a $2.00 tee. It comes in varying heights.

Carrying it in your pocket - little bulky
Wear - guaranteed unbreakable for life
Consistent height - yes

Just tried the mirror tee. Took a little getting used to setting it at an angle but it was worth it, at least 20 more yards - really.

The tees I like and see a lot of are the pro tees that have the color band near the bottom. They also make an offset one which is also color coded.
