Can you imagine 4,000 totally amateur golfers are going to show up at the end of August to play golf in what's known as Golf's World Amateur Handicap Championship? And I am both dumb enough and smart enough to be one of them. Dumb enough, because I know I can't win, my golf game had left me years ago, in fact normally I play only 9 holes and most of the time don't have anything that resembles "competitive action". Now, I have to play by the rules and play no less than 18 holes on four consecutive days and remember I said smart enough to want to, once again, recapture my youth still hope to play well enough not to embarrass myself. I can remember the last time I played in this tournament (some years ago) I was lucky enough to get a hole in one on the first day. So every night in the nineteenth hole people came over to congratulate me and even though it is supposed to work the other way, they clapped me on the back and bought me a drink.
