Getting the best clubs
Charlie's Chatter
Okay, so all you have to do is save up until you have enough money to buy the same golf clubs as your favorite Pro golfer. Then you will be a better player. Well, the "good" golfers are put on the manufacturer's payroll to help promote sales. The manufacturers get together with their latest "star" to reshape the clubs they play with to suit the star's preferences; in other words you (the retail purchaser) never get the same clubs that Arnie, Jack or Tiger play with no matter what the advertisements say or would lead you to believe.

But what are the hand-me-down benefits from the pro's involvement with the manufacturer? Because of this involvement the clubs get better and a good club fitter can help you maximize the benefits of a particular club, similar to what the manufacturer does for their pro golfers. If he happens to be a professional teacher too, so much the better.

Remember, if you think you have a good club you will make a better swing and therefore get a better results. Like it or not, golf is a very mental game...

Hey! I have been golfing for about 2 years and I have been using some old Wilson reflex irons that my dad had and I really wanted to upgrade. I like the Wilson irons and I saw that the new Wilson reflex irons 4-GW are the cheapest clubs u can pretty much get. I usually play a 45-52 and I was wondering if u thought the clubs are too basic. Any other comments would be helpful. Thank you.

I went and bought the Taylormade Rocketballz driver. My older Ping G15 is still longer and straighter. I don't like the sound that comes off of the Rocketz driver. It really hurts the ears. I think I'm going to stick with Ping products from now on.....

Have you hit both of them? Have you tried any others? If you have not, go try them. Which one is more consistent? There are a lot of factors involved with picking a new driver. If you can't play them, at very least go to your favorite golf shop that has a launch monitor and try them. A PING may be longer for me, but the Rocketballz might work better for you.

I have played golf since I was 11 and am 54 now. Manufacturers constantly change what is supposed to "help" your game. A few years ago, every handicap should be able to hit the modern blades. Now, no one should play them and get new cavity back clubs. In 10 years, it will be something else. However, blades won't be it because OEMs figured out two things, one is the male golfer will buy anything he believes gives him more distance and, two, the male golfer has a belief that technology will make him better. Both are half truths if that much. If you can't hit the center of the face, no club is going to help you do it. Best they can do is help lessen the impact of an off center hit but any off center hit will lose distance even with the modern clubs and distance is easily gained when you take lofts 3 or 4 degrees or more lower on irons than they were even 5 years ago. For example, most irons had a 48 degree PW just a few years ago. Not uncommon now to see them at 44 or even 43 degrees. Juicing the lofts to a 9 iron and stamping PW on the club gives the golfer the belief he is longer. Same is true with the driver. Fitting will maximize your driver distance but your swing speed is what it is and nothing is going to magically increase it.

I agree with all of the above but have this to add. Do not abandon the old stuff. I have now outfitted myself with a vintage set for the practice range. 1963 Hogan blades and various woods 1960's - present. The reason is that the early clubs are hard to hit. Thus if I develop my swing to hit them then hitting the modern stuff will be a breeze. It is like Navy Seal training. It is often much harder than the real mission and the report post mission is "that was a piece of cake" Keep those ill fitting hard to hit clubs active for use at the practice range.
